Is there a Honolulu to Maui ferry is one of the most frequent question I get about Hawaii travel. For a very short time in 2009 I was able to say yes, there is, but now, the answer is:
No, there is no ferry from Honolulu to Maui.
The channel is to big, windy, and rough for all but the biggest ships. A super-big catamaran type ferry did come into the islands and try to provided a ferry service between the islands but it ony ran a few times and then there was a big uproar.
Residents were concerned about all sorts of things like the spread of alien species between islands and other issues. Things in Hawaii can be slow to change sometimes. Many people like this about Hawaii.
But, the end result for the ferry was that the Hawaii courts put a stop order on its servicing until an environmental impact statement was done, and this could take years, so the owners of the boat just pulled it out of Hawaii.
Too bad, I was really looking forward to that ferry and I never even got to ride on it.
So How Do I get from Honolulu to Maui
Well, the only real option at this point is to fly. You can fly on one of the two interisland airlines. There are flights all day long every day. They can cost as little as $61 and as much as $140 one way. Book early and online for the best prices.
